Das Hafenterminal ist kompakt, und das Stadtzentrum liegt einen kurzen Fußweg oder eine Taxifahrt bergauf entfernt. Der Mercado dos Lavradores, der Hauptmarkt, ist voller tropischer Früchte, Blumen und frischem Fisch, darunter dem berühmten schwarzen Degenfisch der Insel. Die Blandy's Weinkellerei bietet Verkostungen der Likörweine Madeiras an, die gut altern und sich als Mitbringsel eignen. Die Seilbahn nach Monte bietet einen weiten Blick über Stadt und Hafen. Die Korbschlittenfahrt hinab von Monte, in einem Weidenschlitten, der von zwei Männern mit Strohhüten gelenkt wird, ist eine Tradition in Funchal. Câmara de Lobos, ein Fischerdorf etwa 10 Taximinuten entfernt, hat bunte Boote und Fischrestaurants. Espetada (gegrillter Rindfleischspieß) und Lapas (gegrillte Napfschnecken) sind die lokalen Gerichte. Taxis sind günstig, und der Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus deckt die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten ab.
