Cherbourg sits on the northern tip of Normandy, a port town with serious maritime pedigree. The Titanic stopped here on its maiden voyage, and the old transatlantic terminal still stands in Art Deco grandeur. A short walk from the dock puts you in the Old Town, where half-timbered houses line narrow cobbled lanes and a Thursday market sells local cheese, cider, and calvados. La Cité de la Mer is the main draw: a maritime museum built around the decommissioned submarine Le Redoutable, with a deep-sea aquarium attached.

The D-Day beaches of Omaha and Utah are reachable by car or excursion bus for history-focused visitors. Closer to town, the Liberation Museum on Roule Mountain covers the WWII campaign with panoramic views from the hilltop. The Parapluies de Cherbourg workshop shows how the famous umbrellas are still made by hand. At the harbour, bistros serve Marmite Cherbourgeoise fish soup and fresh oysters. A free shuttle runs between the terminal, train station, and shopping district, and trains connect to Bayeux and its medieval tapestry.
