The town has been a maritime hub since the 17th century when it was the main packet station for Royal Mail ships crossing the Atlantic. Pendennis Castle, a Henry VIII coastal fortress, sits on the headland overlooking the harbour entrance and is well-preserved, with good views toward its sister castle at St Mawes across the water. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall, on the waterfront, covers the region's boat-building and seafaring history. The town centre has independent shops, galleries, and a few decent pubs and cafΓ©s along the high street. Gyllyngvase Beach, a short walk from the centre, is a sheltered sandy beach popular with locals. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are both about 40 minutes away by car.
