Ilhabela's food scene centres on shrimp: grilled, fried, or cooked into a spicy moqueca stew. Fresh tuna caught that morning shows up on most menus, often served simply with lime and olive oil. A chilled caipirinha on the side is standard. The Vila's waterfront restaurants have live music most evenings, and the harbour lights reflecting off the water make for a good setting.

The island has dozens of waterfalls accessible by trails through the Atlantic Forest, and the diving and snorkelling are strong thanks to clear water and several shipwrecks offshore. Pack sturdy shoes and insect repellent, because the borrachudos (small biting flies) are aggressive in the warmer months and will find any exposed skin.
