Ceuta sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, a Spanish enclave on African soil where Iberian and Moroccan cultures overlap daily. The Central Market mixes the scent of cumin and paprika with shouts from fish vendors, and you can eat pescaito frito at one stall and Moroccan chebakia pastries at the next. The city is duty-free, so prices on electronics and perfume run lower than the mainland. Calle de Camoens is the main shopping street, stocked with leather goods, textiles, and ceramics.

Spanish is the official language, though Arabic and French are spoken widely. Most sights are walkable from the port, including the Royal Walls and the Marinid moat fortress. Taxis and local buses cover the rest. If you have a few hours, a day trip to Tetouan across the Moroccan border leads to one of the best-preserved medinas in the country, with whitewashed walls and craft workshops still operating as they have for centuries.
