Alghero is a walled town on Sardinia's northwest coast, originally built by the Catalans in the 14th century. The old town still carries that influence: street signs are in both Italian and Catalan, and the local dialect, Algherese, is closer to Catalan than Italian. The sea walls and towers look out over clear water, and the narrow streets inside have a Mediterranean feel with balconied houses, small churches, and family-run restaurants. Neptune's Grotto, a stalactite cave at the base of the Capo Caccia cliffs, is the main excursion. You can reach it by boat from the harbour or by driving up and descending 654 steps (the Escala del Cabirol). Back in town, lobster Catalan-style (aragosta alla catalana) is the local signature dish, served cold with tomato and onion. The coral jewellery shops along the old town streets sell pieces made from local red coral.
