Runavík is a town of about 3,700 people on the island of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands, sitting at the head of Skálafjørður, the largest fjord in the archipelago. The town is modern and functional, built around the fishing industry that supports most of the economy. Green grass-covered hills rise steeply from the fjord, and the light shifts constantly as weather systems roll through, which in the Faroes means several times an hour. The town itself is quiet, but it is well-placed for reaching the rest of Eysturoy. The village of Gjógv, about 40 minutes north, has a natural gorge harbour and dramatic cliff scenery. Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the Faroes at 880 metres, is a manageable hike from the road in good conditions. The subsea tunnel to Streymoy connects to Tórshavn, the capital. Wind and rain are constant. Pack waterproofs and layers regardless of what the forecast says.
