Djúpivogur is a fishing village between two fjords on Iceland's eastern coast, population around 450. Búlandstindur, the pyramid-shaped mountain above town, is the first thing you see on approach. Smaller ships berth at the quay; larger ones anchor and tender in. Along the harbour, the "Eggs of Merry Bay" is an art installation of 34 granite eggs, each shaped to represent a different local seabird species. Langabúð, a restored 1790 timber trading post, now works as a combined café and cultural exhibition space. Papey Island is reachable by boat and has a puffin colony and one of Iceland's oldest wooden churches. On the mainland, coastal walking trails follow the fjord edges past rough grassland and basalt outcrops. The restaurants in town serve Arctic char and plokkfiskur, a thick mashed fish stew that's a local staple. Djúpivogur was Iceland's first Cittaslow town, part of the international slow-city movement. There's not much shopping beyond a few craft stores selling jewellery made from Icelandic stone. The pace is deliberately unhurried, and the quiet is part of the appeal.
