Seyðisfjörður is a small town of about 750 people at the end of a narrow fjord in eastern Iceland. The approach by ship is dramatic, with waterfalls streaming down the steep valley walls on both sides. The Blue Church (Bláa Kirkjan) at the end of the rainbow-painted street is the town's most photographed feature. Ships dock at the pier or anchor and tender, depending on size. The town has timber houses brought from Norway in kit form over a century ago. The Technical Museum covers the early telecommunications history, when the first submarine cable connecting Iceland to Europe landed here in 1906. Walking trails lead up the valley to waterfalls, and the surrounding peaks reach about 1,000 metres. The Skálanes nature reserve, about 17km along the coast, has birdwatching and ruins. Fresh Arctic char and langoustines are served at the local restaurants. The Icelandic króna is the currency.
