Saint-Denis is the capital of Réunion, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean. The town has Creole architecture, colourful shuttered houses, and a busy central market. The Jardin de l'État, a botanical garden dating from 1773, sits in the centre of town with a small natural history museum at one end. French is the official language, and the euro is the currency. The real draw is the island's interior. Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupts regularly and can be visited when conditions allow. The Cirque de Mafate, a volcanic caldera accessible only on foot or by helicopter, has isolated villages and steep hiking trails. Closer to Saint-Denis, the coast has black-sand beaches and sugarcane fields. Créole cooking mixes French, Indian, and Malagasy influences: rougail saucisse, samosas, and cari poulet are everyday dishes. Vanilla from the island is considered some of the best in the world.
