Antsiranana, once known as Diego Suarez, is on Madagascar's northern tip. It has one of the largest natural harbours in the world. French colonial architecture stands alongside busy Malagasy markets where spices, vanilla, and tropical fruit are sold in open stalls. The surrounding coastline is a mix of rugged bays, sugar-loaf islands, and golden beaches backed by dry forest. The Montagne d'Ambre National Park, about an hour south, has rainforest trails with lemurs, chameleons, and waterfalls. The Red Tsingy, a formation of red sandstone pinnacles, is reachable by 4x4. In town, the market near the harbour sells local crafts and ylang-ylang essential oil. Food stalls serve zebu steak and fresh seafood. French is widely spoken alongside Malagasy. The bay itself is dramatic from the water, especially the narrow channel entrance. Taxis are cheap but agree on the price before setting off.
