Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius, sitting between mountain peaks and the Indian Ocean. The Caudan Waterfront complex near the cruise terminal has shops, restaurants, and the Blue Penny Museum, which displays one of the world's rarest stamps. The Central Market is louder and more authentic, with stalls selling spices (vanilla, cinnamon, star anise), textiles, and fruit. The Citadelle (Fort Adelaide) on the hill above the city has views over the harbour and rooftops. Chinatown around Royal Road has small restaurants serving Mauritian-Chinese food. Outside the city, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens have giant Victoria amazonica water lilies and tropical trees. Trou aux Biches and other north coast beaches are about 30-40 minutes away. For food, try gateau piment (chilli cakes) from a street vendor or a Creole fish curry. The Mauritian Rupee is the currency.
