Eidfjord is a small village at the inner end of an arm of the Hardangerfjord, surrounded by mountains that drop almost vertically into the water. Ships dock right in town, so you step off and you're there. The village has about 1,000 people, a 14th-century church, and Viking-era burial mounds at Hæreid. The Troll Train covers these sites in a loop if you'd rather ride than walk. The Hardangervidda Nature Centre has interactive exhibits on the mountain plateau above and a panoramic film worth watching. Vøringsfossen is the main excursion. This 182-metre waterfall is a short bus ride through the Måbødalen valley, and newer viewing platforms get you close to the edge. The Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO-listed side fjord, is accessible by boat tour. Eidfjord's orchards produce fruit that shows up in local cafés, especially in spring. Shops sell carved wooden items and wool textiles. Cards are accepted most places, but carry some kroner for smaller vendors.
