Ulvik is a small village at the inner end of the Hardangerfjord, surrounded by steep mountains and fruit orchards. The area is known as the orchard of Norway, and the hillsides produce apples, pears, and cherries that go into the region's well-regarded ciders. The tender pier drops you in the centre of the village. The Olav H. Hauge Centre honours one of Norway's best-known poets, who lived in Ulvik most of his life. Local cider farms like Ulvik Frukt & Cideri run tastings and tours. The Ulvik Church has a rose-painted interior worth a quick visit. Kayaking and RIB boat trips run on the fjord. Vøringsfossen, one of Norway's tallest waterfalls, is reachable as a day trip but needs some travel time. The village has shops selling knitwear and handmade crafts. Norwegian krone is the currency, and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. Sunday hours are limited.
