Vik, or Vikøyri, is a small village on the Sognefjord in western Norway. Ships anchor offshore and passengers tender in. The village has painted wooden houses, a stone church from the 12th century (Hove Church), and a waterfall dropping from the cliffs behind town. The fjord water is calm, and the green hillsides are steep enough to feel enclosed. Hopperstad Stave Church, a 12th-century wooden church with dragon-head carvings, is one of Norway's best-preserved stave churches and sits a short drive up the valley. The village has a small museum and a handful of shops selling knitwear and local crafts. Boat trips and kayaking are possible on the fjord. The pace here is genuinely slow, and the appeal is the landscape itself: mountains, waterfalls, and water. Norwegian krone is the currency. English is understood.
