Haugesund is a small coastal town on Norway's southwest coast, between Stavanger and Bergen. It claims a direct link to the Viking Age: King Harald Fairhair, who unified Norway in the 9th century, is buried at the Haraldshaugen monument on the town's edge. The compact centre runs along the Haraldsgata pedestrian street, where the pink town hall from 1931 is the most recognisable building. The Avaldsnes Viking Village on nearby Bukkøy island has reconstructed longhouses and living-history demonstrations. Skudeneshavn, a well-preserved fishing village with white wooden houses, is a short drive south. Langfoss, one of Norway's tallest waterfalls, drops directly into Åkrafjord and is reachable by car or excursion. In town, waterfront restaurants serve grilled cod and smoked salmon. Local shops sell woollen sweaters, cloudberry jam, and wooden carvings. Most shops close on Sundays. Walking covers the centre easily, and the Kolumbus app handles buses and ferries for longer trips.
