Le Verdon-sur-Mer sits at the tip of the Médoc peninsula where the Gironde estuary meets the Atlantic. The cruise dock is about two miles from the village, and there are no direct transport links, so most people take organised excursions. The surrounding area is flat, with salt marshes, pine forests, and wide sandy beaches. Bordeaux is about 90 minutes south and is the main day-trip destination. The Cordouan Lighthouse, about 7km offshore, is a UNESCO-listed 17th-century structure sometimes called the Queen of Lighthouses. Guided boat tours run from Le Verdon or Royan across the estuary. Soulac-sur-Mer, a small resort town 6km away, has a beach, cafés, and a striped Romanesque church partially buried in sand. Local food includes fresh oysters from the Arcachon beds, grilled sea bass, and cannelés from Bordeaux. French is the dominant language, and the euro is the currency. Shops close for lunch.
