About Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay is a small town on South Africa's Garden Route where Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias first landed in 1488. The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex has a full-size replica of his caravel, a shell museum, and the Post Office Tree, a milkwood tree where sailors once left letters in old boots for passing ships to collect. A coastal path connects the museum to the Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse, which has views of the bay and, in season, whales breaching offshore. A boat trip to Seal Island gets you close to thousands of Cape fur seals on the rocks. Shark-cage diving is available for those interested. The Point has ancient caves where some of humanity's earliest ancestors lived. Grilled kingklip or snoek, paired with a glass of local wine, is the meal to order at a waterside restaurant. The Model Shipyard sells detailed handmade model ships. English and Afrikaans are both widely spoken, and the South African rand is the currency.
