Ketchikan sits on Revillagigedo Island in southeast Alaska and gets a lot of rain, which keeps everything green. The town's downtown is compact and walkable from the cruise berths, with a free shuttle connecting them. Creek Street is the main draw: a wooden boardwalk above the creek, lined with shops and galleries in buildings that used to be brothels, including Dolly's House museum. The salmon hatchery next to Creek Street has a fish ladder where you can watch salmon leaping upstream during the summer run. Totem Bight State Park and Saxman Native Village both have impressive collections of hand-carved totem poles. For adventure, float plane tours over Misty Fjords National Monument show dramatic cliff-sided fjords from the air. Try smoked salmon or Dungeness crab at one of the waterfront spots. Local microbreweries are worth a stop too. Bring a rain jacket regardless of the forecast.
