Whittier is a tiny town of about 180 people at the head of Passage Canal on Prince William Sound. Nearly all residents live in the same building, Begich Towers, a former military barracks. The only road in goes through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a 2.6-mile single-lane passage shared with trains. The port is a departure point for glacier cruises into Prince William Sound. Boat tours pass tidewater glaciers, where ice calves into the water, and commonly spot whales, sea otters, and sea lions. Kayak trips run in the calmer coves. The Horsetail Falls Trail is a short hike along a creek with views of waterfalls. Anchorage is about 60 miles away by road and reachable as a day trip. Fresh king crab, salmon, and halibut are served at the few harbourfront restaurants. The town is small enough that everything is within walking distance of the dock. US dollar is the currency.
