Exmouth is a small town on Western Australia's North West Cape, built in the 1960s to support a US naval communications base. The town itself is unremarkable, but Ningaloo Reef, which runs along the coast just offshore, is the reason people come. Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo starts within metres of the beach, making snorkelling accessible without a long boat ride. The coral is healthy and the fish life is dense. Between March and July, whale sharks cruise through these waters and licensed operators run swim-with-whale-shark tours. Humpback whales pass through from June to November. The Cape Range National Park, on the peninsula behind town, has limestone gorges, Turquoise Bay (one of Australia's best snorkelling beaches), and dry, red landscape typical of outback Western Australia. The town has basic services but limited dining options, so set your expectations accordingly.
