Lifou is the largest of New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands, a raised coral atoll east of Grande Terre. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the beach near the village of Easo. The island is governed by customary Kanak chiefs, and visitors should follow local protocols, which typically include a welcoming ceremony at the beach. Jokin Cliffs on the northern coast have dramatic limestone formations and a snorkelling spot at their base with clear water and coral. Notre-Dame de Lourdes chapel is set in a cave and worth seeing. The vanilla plantations on the island produce highly regarded beans. Baie de Jinek has a sheltered beach with good swimming. The island has few roads and limited facilities, so most people explore by guided tour. The currency is the CFP Franc. French is the main European language, alongside the local Drehu language.
