Moreton Island is the world's third-largest sand island, sitting off the coast of Brisbane. There are no paved roads, so getting around means 4WD vehicles on sand tracks. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to Tangalooma Resort, the island's main hub. The Tangalooma Wrecks, a row of sunken ships close to shore, form an artificial reef popular with snorkellers. Colourful fish and sea turtles are regular sights around the hulls. The Desert, a stretch of tall inland dunes, draws people for sand tobogganing. Freshwater lagoons tucked into the dunes are calm enough for kayaking or swimming. Humpback whales pass through the surrounding waters between June and November, and dugongs are spotted year-round. In the evenings, wild bottlenose dolphins come into the shallows near the resort jetty to feed, a tradition the island is known for. The resort has restaurants, bars, and day-use facilities.
