Falmouth is a harbour town on the south coast of Cornwall, England, built around one of the world's largest natural deep-water harbours. The town has been a maritime hub since the 17th century when it was the main packet station for Royal Mail ships crossing the Atlantic. Pendennis Castle, a Henry VIII coastal fortress, sits on the headland overlooking the harbour entrance and is well-preserved, with good views toward its sister castle at St Mawes across the water. The National Maritime Museum Cornwall, on the waterfront, covers the region's boat-building and seafaring history. The town centre has independent shops, galleries, and a few decent pubs and cafés along the high street. Gyllyngvase Beach, a short walk from the centre, is a sheltered sandy beach popular with locals. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are both about 40 minutes away by car. Cornish pasties and cream teas are the obligatory local food.
