Greenock sits at the head of the Clyde estuary, about 40 minutes by train from Glasgow. The Ocean Terminal is modern and well-organized, and local volunteers sometimes offer free walking tours right at the pier. The town itself has a Victorian waterfront and a handful of historic buildings, including the McLean Museum with its small but decent collection on local maritime history. Most passengers use Greenock as a jumping-off point for Glasgow or the Highlands. Edinburgh is also doable in a long day trip. If you stay local, the walk along the Esplanade gives views across the Clyde to the hills beyond, and the town centre has a few cafés and pubs. The train station is close to the terminal, making independent exploration straightforward. The weather is unpredictable, so layers and a waterproof jacket are worth packing.
