Waterford was founded by Vikings in 914 AD, making it Ireland's oldest city. The cruise ship berths at Belview Port, about 12 kilometres from the city centre, with shuttle buses covering the distance. The medieval quarter has three museums in the Viking Triangle: Reginald's Tower, the Bishop's Palace, and the Medieval Museum, all close together. The House of Waterford Crystal runs factory tours showing how the crystal is cut and engraved by hand. The city centre is compact and walkable, with narrow lanes, a cathedral, and a handful of pubs that have live traditional music in the evenings. Dunmore East, a small fishing village near Belview Port, has a harbour and cliff walks. The food to try: a blaa, a soft white bread roll particular to Waterford, filled with butter or bacon. Irish pubs serve stout, whiskey, and seafood chowder. The euro is the currency.
