Costa Maya is a purpose-built cruise port on Mexico's southern Caribbean coast, about four hours south of Cancún. The terminal area has a pool, swim-up bars, shops, and restaurants arranged in a village layout with Maya-inspired stonework and colours. Ships dock directly, so there's no tendering. Beyond the port complex, the fishing village of Mahahual is a short taxi ride south along the coast, with a long stretch of sand, beachfront restaurants, and a quieter pace than the terminal itself. The main excursion options are the Maya ruins at Chacchoben, about 70 minutes inland, and the Bacalar Lagoon, known for its seven shades of blue. Snorkelling on the Mesoamerican Reef is available right off the coast. Within the terminal, shopping runs toward silver jewellery, vanilla extract, and tequila. Tacos, ceviche, and fresh seafood are the food highlights. Pesos are the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted. If you skip the organised tours, Mahahual's boardwalk and roadside cevicherías are a solid way to spend a few hours.
