Amber Cove is a purpose-built cruise port near Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic's north coast. The terminal area has a swimming pool, water slides, a zip line, and a gondola ride overlooking the bay, all of which can be used for a fee. The complex is self-contained, with shops and restaurants on site. Puerto Plata's main attraction is the Teleférico, a cable car that goes to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres, where a smaller version of Rio's Christ the Redeemer statue overlooks the coast. The Fort of San Felipe, a 16th-century colonial fortress, sits on the waterfront in town. The Amber Museum in a Victorian villa displays amber specimens, including pieces with insects trapped inside. Dominican rum and cigars make standard souvenirs. Mamajuana, a local drink made from bark, rum, and honey, is offered at most bars. The Dominican Peso is the currency, though US dollars are accepted.
