Izmir docks at Alsancak, an industrial pier close to the upscale Alsancak neighbourhood. The Kordon waterfront promenade runs along the gulf and is where locals walk, fish from the harbour, and sit in tea houses. Konak Square, the city centre, has the Clock Tower and sits at the entrance to the Kemeraltı Bazaar, a network of narrow streets selling spices, textiles, and leather goods. The ancient Agora of Smyrna ruins are a short walk from there. Izmir's street food is excellent: simit (sesame bread rings) and balık ekmek (grilled fish sandwiches) are cheap and everywhere. Restaurants serve meze platters and slow-cooked lamb. A dolmuş (shared minibus) costs almost nothing and gives you a local experience. For a day trip, Ephesus is about 80km south and reachable by organised tour or by train to Selçuk. Pergamon is another option to the north.
