Kavala is a port city in northern Greece, built on slopes facing the Aegean so the town rises in tiers from the harbour. The Kamares Aqueduct, built during the Ottoman period by Suleiman the Magnificent, spans a valley near the centre and is the most recognisable landmark. The old town, Panagia, sits on a rocky headland above the port with narrow cobbled streets, Ottoman-era houses, and the Imaret, a former charitable institution now converted into a hotel. The harbour has colourful fishing boats and seafood tavernas where you can eat grilled catch of the day for reasonable prices. The Archaeological Museum covers finds from the region including Macedonian gold. Kavala is also the departure point for ferries to the island of Thasos, which has good beaches and ancient ruins if you have a full day. The city is walkable from the pier, and the euro is the currency.
