San Cristóbal is the easternmost island in the Galápagos and its administrative capital. Ships anchor offshore and passengers tender to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, a small town on a sheltered bay. Sea lions sprawl on the benches, docks, and beach right in town and are completely unbothered by people. The Galápagos Interpretation Centre, a short walk from the waterfront, covers the natural history and geology of the archipelago. Frigatbird Hill, a viewpoint above town, has nesting colonies of both great and magnificent frigatebirds. Tijeretas Cove, a short hike from the centre, has clear water for snorkelling with sea turtles and reef fish. La Lobería beach, south of town, is a rocky shore where marine iguanas and sea lions share the space. The US dollar is the currency. Fresh seafood, including lobster in season, is served at small restaurants along the waterfront. Respect the wildlife and stay on marked trails.
