Grundarfjordur

Grundarfjörður is a small fishing village on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, sitting directly below Kirkjufell, the distinctively shaped mountain that shows up in most Iceland travel photography. The pier is right in town, and everything is walkable. Colourful houses line the waterfront, and the harbour still functions as a working fishing port. A short walk from the village brings you to Kirkjufellsfoss, a pair of waterfalls that frame the mountain behind them. The Saga Centre in town covers local history and the area's connection to the sagas. Seasonal whale-watching tours run from the harbour, with humpbacks and orcas spotted regularly. For food, the harbourfront restaurants serve fresh fish, and lamb stew is a reliable warm-up on cold days. The local shops sell hand-knitted wool sweaters and lava jewellery. Most things you'd want to see are within a ten-minute walk of where you step off.
