Aburatsu sits on the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in southern Kyushu, a small fishing port backed by subtropical forest and warm Pacific currents. The Nichinan coastline south of town has a series of rock formations carved by waves, including the washboard-like Devil's Washboard (Oni no Sentakuita), flat rock shelves that extend into the sea at low tide. Udo Shrine, built into a cave in the sea cliffs about 20 minutes south, is unusual for a Shinto site and has ocean views from the approach path. The local fish market sells fresh bonito and flying fish, both regional specialties. Sun Messe Nichinan, a park on the coastal road, has replica moai statues donated with permission from Easter Island's elders. The area is quiet and tourist infrastructure is limited, so having a plan before arriving helps. Japanese is the only language you'll hear here.
