Jeju Island is a volcanic island off the southern tip of South Korea, often compared to Hawaii for its mild climate and dramatic scenery. The cruise terminal at Seogwipo-Gangjeong is modern and well-organised. The island's landscapes shift quickly: hexagonal basalt columns along the coast, waterfalls dropping into the ocean, and Hallasan, a dormant volcano at the centre that's South Korea's highest peak. Jeongbang Waterfall, one of the few waterfalls in Asia that falls directly into the sea, is close to the port. The haenyeo, female free-divers who harvest seafood by hand, are unique to Jeju and still work the coastal waters. Try black pork barbecue or fresh abalone at a local restaurant. Tangerines grow everywhere on the island and show up in everything from juice to chocolate. Buses connect the major sites, though hiring a driver for the day is more efficient.
