Miyako Island, in Okinawa Prefecture, has some of the clearest water in Japan. The flat, limestone island is surrounded by white sand beaches and coral reefs. Cruise ships dock at Fujiwara Pier, an industrial area, but the beaches are a short drive away. Maehama Beach, often ranked among Japan's best, has fine white sand and calm turquoise water. Higashi-Henna Cape, a narrow headland, drops off sharply with views in every direction. Snorkelling and diving are the main draws. The coral reefs close to shore are healthy and full of tropical fish, sea turtles, and manta rays during season. Three long bridges connect Miyako to its smaller neighbouring islands, and driving across them is worth it for the views alone. Local Miyako beef is raised on the island and appears on restaurant menus alongside fresh tropical fruit and Okinawan soba. The island is quiet, with little nightlife, and most visitors come for the water.
