Wakayama sits on the western coast of Japan's Kii Peninsula, across the bay from Osaka. Wakayama Castle, a hilltop reconstruction with views of the city, is the main landmark and has a small museum inside. The Kuroshio Market, near the harbour, sells fresh fish and sushi straight from the boats. The city is also a gateway to the sacred Kumano Kodō pilgrimage trails, a UNESCO site in the mountains to the south. Kōyasan, a mountaintop Buddhist monastery complex founded in 816 AD, is about two hours by train and cable car and is worth a full day. Closer to port, Kimiidera Temple has views over the city and dates from the 8th century. Kakinoha-zushi, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, is the regional speciality. Ramen shops near the station are good for a quick meal. Cash is more useful than cards in smaller shops. The yen is the currency.
