Port Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. About 3,500 people live in the islands, most of them in Stanley. Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to a jetty in the harbour. The town has brightly painted houses, a cathedral with an arch made from whale bones, and the Historic Dockyard Museum covering the islands' maritime and military history. The 1982 Falklands War features prominently: the Liberation Monument is on the waterfront, and several battlefield sites are accessible by 4x4 tour. Gypsy Cove, a short drive from town, has a Magellanic penguin colony and a minefield from the war (fenced off, the penguins don't trigger the mines). Bluff Cove Lagoon has gentoo and king penguins. The wildlife is the main reason to visit: penguins, albatross, and sea lions. The Falkland Islands Pound and British Pound are both accepted.
