Recife is a large port city in northeastern Brazil, built across several islands and connected by bridges, which gives it the "Venice of Brazil" nickname. Passengers are shuttled from the commercial harbour to the downtown area. Recife Antigo, the old town district, has cobblestone streets, the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue (the oldest in the Americas), and Praça do Marco Zero, the symbolic centre of the city. Street vendors sell coconut water and tapioca crepes. Olinda, a UNESCO-listed colonial town on a hill about 20 minutes north, has colourful baroque churches and views over the Atlantic. Both Recife and Olinda are famous for their Carnival celebrations, which follow a different style than Rio's. Boa Viagem beach is the main city beach, though shark warnings are common and most locals avoid swimming past the reef line. Cartola, a dessert of fried banana topped with cheese and cinnamon, is a local favourite. Taxis and ride-sharing apps are the easiest way to get around.
