Salaverry is a commercial port about 15 minutes by road from Trujillo, a colonial city nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring for its mild, dry climate. Trujillo's Plaza de Armas is lined with pastel mansions and a 17th-century cathedral. The main draw outside the city is Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its mud-brick palaces and courtyards are carved with geometric and animal designs. The Temples of the Sun and Moon, built by the Moche civilisation, are nearby. The Temple of the Moon has well-preserved polychrome murals that are still being excavated. Huanchaco, a fishing village on the coast, is where fishermen still use caballitos de totora, traditional reed boats. Fresh ceviche at one of the beachfront restaurants in Huanchaco is the meal to have. Taxis from the port are the easiest transport. Peruvian sol is the currency.
