Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Vietnam, where roughly 3,000 limestone karsts rise out of green water in the Gulf of Tonkin. Ships dock at the Hon Gai International Passenger Terminal, and from there most visitors board smaller boats or junks to cruise through the bay itself. The formations range from small pillars to forested islands with hidden caves and grottoes. Kayaking through the quieter channels between the karsts is one of the better ways to see the bay up close. Some tours include stops at floating fishing villages or cave visits. The water colour shifts between green and grey depending on the weather, and fog can roll in quickly, which changes the mood entirely. Vendors sell fruit, drinks, and pearl jewellery at various stopping points. The bay is large enough that a half-day tour only covers a portion of it.
