Manila is the capital of the Philippines and one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Ships dock at Pier 4 near the old walled city of Intramuros. The walls, gates, and Fort Santiago date from the Spanish colonial period and are the main historic attraction. San Agustin Church inside Intramuros is a UNESCO site and one of the oldest stone churches in the Philippines. Rizal Park (Luneta Park) is a large green space near the waterfront with monuments to national hero José Rizal. Manila's traffic is notoriously heavy, so plan accordingly and keep excursions focused. SM Mall of Asia, one of the largest shopping malls in Asia, is near the bay. The food is good and cheap: try adobo (meat braised in vinegar and soy sauce), sinigang (sour soup), or halo-halo (shaved ice dessert). The Philippine Peso is the currency, and English is widely spoken.
