Puerto Princesa is the capital of Palawan in the western Philippines. The city sits on Honda Bay and is the staging point for excursions into Palawan's natural areas. The port is basic, and the city centre has a few blocks of restaurants, shops, and tricycle (motorised rickshaw) traffic. The Baker's Hill area outside town has gardens and a bakery popular with locals. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, about 80km north, is a UNESCO site with an underground river that flows through a cave system for about 8km. Boat tours take you into the first 1.5km of the cave. Honda Bay island-hopping tours visit small islands with beach time and snorkelling. Ugong Rock has a cave and zip line. For food, try crocodile sisig (a local novelty) or fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant. The Philippine Peso is the currency, and English is widely spoken.
