Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island, and ships dock right in the city centre. The town is compact and walkable, with Victorian-era buildings along the waterfront. Province House, where the Confederation of Canada was debated in 1864, is the main historic site. Great George Street runs from the harbour uphill through the heritage district. PEI is famous for Anne of Green Gables: the Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish is about 40 minutes by car and draws fans from around the world, particularly from Japan. The island's red-sand beaches and rolling farmland are distinctive. Lobster is the local food: lobster suppers at church halls and community centres are a PEI tradition. COWS ice cream, made on the island, has a loyal following. New Glasgow Lobster Suppers is one of the well-known spots. The Canadian dollar is the currency.
