Saint John sits on the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides in the world. The water level shifts by up to 16 metres twice a day, exposing the rocky ocean floor at low tide. The Reversing Falls Rapids, where the St. John River meets the incoming tide, are worth watching from the lookout or the pedestrian bridge above. Fort Howe gives a view over the harbour and the city's Victorian-era buildings. The City Market, running since 1876, sells smoked salmon, dulse seaweed, fiddleheads, and handmade crafts under a ship's-hull ceiling. Loyalist House, an 1810 Georgian home, has original furnishings and survived the Great Fire of 1877. The Irving Nature Park, a short drive from port, has walking trails along the Bay of Fundy shore. Moose, seals, and bald eagles are all regular sightings. Fish and chips or a lobster roll are easy to find near the waterfront.
