Santa Barbara sits on a narrow strip of coast between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific, about 150 kilometres northwest of Los Angeles. The Spanish Colonial Revival architecture along State Street and the red-tile roofs give the downtown a distinctive look, enforced by building codes since the 1925 earthquake. The Old Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786, is one of the best preserved of California's 21 missions, with a stone façade and rose gardens. Stearns Wharf, the oldest working wharf on the West Coast, extends into the harbour and has seafood restaurants and wine tasting rooms. The Funk Zone, a warehouse district between State Street and the beach, has local wineries, craft breweries and galleries. The Santa Ynez wine country, about 45 minutes over the mountains, produces good pinot noir and chardonnay. The weather is mild year-round, and the beaches have the soft sand Southern California is known for.
