As your ship enters Gibraltar's harbour, the Rock fills the skyline, a 426-metre limestone monolith that has marked the strait for millennia. This British Overseas Territory sits just across from Spain, and the mix shows: red telephone boxes next to Moorish castle walls, fish and chips sold alongside tapas. Barbary macaques wander the upper slopes, the only wild primates in Europe. The cruise terminal is a short walk from the centre of town. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve covers most of the peninsula's summit and holds the siege tunnels, St Michael's Cave, and the macaque colony. Main Street runs the length of town with duty-free shops and pubs. For a quieter stop, the Mediterranean Steps trail follows the east face of the Rock down to Europa Point, where you can see the African coast on a clear day. Taxis and the cable car make getting around straightforward.
