Livorno is the cruise port for Florence and Pisa, both reachable by train or organised tour. Florence is about 90 minutes by train from Livorno Centrale station, and Pisa is about 20 minutes. The Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli complex in Pisa are compact enough to visit in a couple of hours. Florence needs a full day to cover the Uffizi, the Duomo, and the Ponte Vecchio. If you stay in Livorno, the Fortezza Nuova is a 16th-century fortress surrounded by canals. The Mercato Centrale has fresh produce, seafood, and is where locals shop. Cacciucco, a spicy fish stew, is the local speciality. The Terrazza Mascagni oceanfront promenade has a distinctive checkerboard pavement. The Quattro Mori statue at the port entrance is the city's most recognisable monument. Trains run frequently to both Florence and Pisa, so independent travel is straightforward.
