Prince Rupert sits on Kaien Island on British Columbia's north coast, below the Alaska panhandle. The cruise terminal is near the town centre, and Cow Bay, a small waterfront district with colourful buildings and seafood restaurants, is within walking distance. The Museum of Northern British Columbia covers Tsimshian and Haida art and culture in a building styled as a longhouse. Excursions include the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary (accessible by boat), whale watching in the strait, and the North Pacific Cannery, a preserved salmon cannery in a fjord-side setting. The Butze Rapids trail, a short drive from town, has a viewpoint over reversing tidal rapids. Prince Rupert gets a lot of rain, so waterproof layers are essential. Fresh Dungeness crab and smoked salmon from the local shops are the foods to try. The Canadian dollar is the currency.
