Paradise Harbor is a bay on the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the few places where cruise ships can enter a sheltered harbour surrounded by glaciers, ice cliffs and snow-covered mountains. The name is fitting. On calm days the water reflects the ice and peaks with an almost surreal clarity. Ships typically anchor in the bay and launch Zodiac cruises among the icebergs and along the glacier faces. The Almirante Brown Argentine research station sits on the shore, though it is not always staffed. Gentoo penguins nest in the area, and leopard seals are sometimes spotted on ice floes. Setting foot on the shore here counts as stepping onto the Antarctic continent, which is a draw for many passengers. Weather conditions determine whether landings are possible on any given day. Bring every layer you own, including waterproof outer gear, and keep your camera charged in an inside pocket because cold drains batteries fast.
