Port Douglas is a small town in tropical North Queensland where the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest meet the coast. Ships tender to the marina, and the town is compact enough to walk around. Four Mile Beach stretches along the coast, edged by palm trees. The main street, Macrossan Street, has restaurants, shops, and galleries. Reef trips leave from the marina daily, heading to the outer reef for snorkelling and diving on coral formations. The Daintree Rainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest in the world, is about an hour north. A river cruise on the Daintree River gives a good chance of spotting saltwater crocodiles. The Wildlife Habitat has kangaroos, koalas, and cassowaries. Sunday markets at Anzac Park sell local produce, crafts, and food. Fish and chips or barramundi at a waterfront restaurant is the standard meal. Australian dollars are the currency.
